As a lv 59 I dont have that much more experience than you however I have put some of my own money into this game to buy clubs. I'll explain what I looked for and what I got and why.
First purchase was a putter. Taylor made spider... so many people use them, once I brought one I saw why. It dropped my best score at the time dramatically.
Second purchase was a driver I was looking for something with a slow swing meter and good distance and was going to carry me a long way forward in this game, as I only wanted to buy 1 more driver at lv 90+. After looking around I found this one:
TaylorMade R1 TP 9.0 White Driver (Aldila 65 shaft)(L48+)
TaylorMade R1 TP 9.0 White Driver (Aldila 65 shaft)(L48+)I rented a few other clubs available to me but I found this one to be the best value for money at the level I was at. I dont see myself changing it for a long time now.
The thought dawned on me after that to work out the structure of my clubs, so I have a base set of distances. i.e, my 60w is 65y, my 54w is 85y, my pw is 105y ect all the way up to my 3h being 205y. So I have all of that covered.
So the next club I brought were my wedges. Again low swing meter and trying to keep a distance structure. After renting a few I settled on these ones. (Wedges seem to have a faster swing meter than the rest of your clubs so dont get too phased by that.)
TaylorMade ATV 54° Wedge (L14+)
TaylorMade ATV 60° Wedge (L14+)
Both do the job and again I dont see a need to change until something much better becomes available.
After that I brought my irons.
PING K15 Iron Set (Graphite) (L36+)
Again the same reasons slow swing meter, taking me a long way forward in the same and they fitted in perfectly to the distance structure I had going. I can't fault them and wont be changing anytime soon.
last was to find a 3w and 3h to fit in
TaylorMade Rocketballz 3 Fairway Wood (L26+)
TaylorMade Rocketballz 3 Rescue 19° (Steel) (L26+)
And as like all the other clubs, rented a few first, but settled on these ones.
The things you want to consider is what you are going to be happy with, I dont like a fast swing meter, I so went for accuracy over distance, I am not the most accurate without the clubs I have. How ong you want to keep the club, I brought things that I feel would take me all the way to the back tees before I have to upgrade again, and apart from the few long par 4's I have comfortable approach shots into the green with my driver distance.
And a good set of balls goes a long way.
Hope this helps
